Improving angle stability by switching shunt reactors in mixed overhead cable lines. An Italian 400 kV case study

2019

Stringent environmental constraints make the construction of new transmission overhead lines more and more difficult. Alternatively, today it is possible to use cable lines for high (HV) and extra-high (EHV) voltage systems. The configuration of the so-called mixed lines can create some problems in the operation of the electrical system, both during steady-state and transient conditions. In particular, the system stability is one of the main concerns when analyzing the dynamic response of power systems. In this paper, the study of angular stability of a system containing a mixed line is presented: a specific control logic applied to the shunt reactors of the mixed line is proposed as improv…

Species’ ecological functionality alters the outcome of fish stocking success predicted by a food-web model

2018

Fish stocking is used worldwide in conservation and management, but its effects on food-web dynamics and ecosystem stability are poorly known. To better understand these effects and predict the outcomes of stocking, we used an empirically validated network model of a well-studied lake ecosystem. We simulate two stocking scenarios with two native fish species valuable for fishing. In the first scenario, we stock planktivorous fish (whitefish) larvae in the ecosystem. This leads to a 1% increase in adult whitefish biomasses and decreases the biomasses of the top predator (perch). In the second scenario, we also stock perch larvae in the ecosystem. This decreases the planktivorous whitefish an…

Robust delay-dependent H∞ control of uncertain time-delay systems with mixed neutral, discrete, and distributed time-delays and Markovian switching p…

2011

Author's version of an article published in the journal: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/tcsi.2011.2106090 The problem of robust mode-dependent delayed state feedback H ∞ control is investigated for a class of uncertain time-delay systems with Markovian switching parameters and mixed discrete, neutral, and distributed delays. Based on the LyapunovKrasovskii functional theory, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities for the stochastic stability and stabilization of the considered system using some free matrices. The desired control is …

Revisiting the role of top-down and bottom-up controls in stabilisation of nutrient-rich plankton communities

2019

Understanding the conditions for successful control of phytoplankton by zooplankton in eutrophic ecosystems is a highly important research area with a wide implementation of mathematical modelling. Theoretical models generally predict destabilisation of food webs in eutrophic environments with large-amplitude oscillations of population densities which would eventually result in species extinction. On the other hand, these theoretical predic- tions are often at odds with ecological observations demonstrating stable dynamics even for a high nutrient load. This apparent discrepancy is known in the literature as Rosen- zweig’s “paradox of enrichment”. Recent theoretical works emphasize a crucia…

Grid-Forming Converters in Weak Grids – The Case of a Mediterranean Island

2019

The existing power network of a Mediterranean island is used as test bed for the study of grid-forming converter dynamics in weak grid conditions. The control scheme adopted for the converter falls in the category of the so called virtual synchronous machines (VSM). Particular attention is committed to the interaction between the converter controls and the synchronous machines dynamics. Time delays typically associated to measurements and filters are considered in the study, and included in the system model with a specific mathematical approach. Time-domain simulations show the occurrence of oscillatory instability in the system, with VSM and synchronous machines swinging against each other…

An improved anatomical MRI technique with suppression of fixative fluid artifacts for the investigation of human postmortem brain phantoms

2016

PURPOSE Phantoms are often used to assess MR system stability in multicenter studies. Postmortem brain phantoms best replicate human brain anatomy, allowing for a combined assessment of the MR system and software chain for data analysis. However, a wash-out of fixative fluid affecting T1 values and thus T1-weighted sequences such as magnetization-prepared 180 degrees radiofrequency pulses and rapid gradient-echo (MP-RAGE) has been reported for brain phantoms, hampering their immediate use. The purpose of this study was the creation of anatomical data that provide the characteristics of conventional data while avoiding this artifact. THEORY AND METHODS Two brain phantoms were scanned at seve…

A Study of Power-Frequency Dynamics in Isolated Power Networks with 100% Converter-Interfaced Generation

2020

The operation of a system with 100% converter-interfaced generation poses several questions and challenges regarding various aspects of the dynamic characteristics of the system. The effects related to the power-frequency control are among the most relevant issues which need to be investigated. The paper takes into examination the case of an existing isolated power network of a geographical island assuming a completely converter-interfaced generation. The factors playing a fundamental role in the assessment of which sources should be designated to be grid-forming are identified with a small signal model formulation of a generic multiple oscillators system. Simulations and analysis performed…

Inertial response of isolated power networks with wind power plants

2019

The constant increase of power generation provided by renewable energy source (RES) power plants is causing a progressive reduction of the overall inertia of the power systems. Especially in the case of small, isolated power networks, the replacement of conventional generation plants with RES power plants can affect significantly the frequency response of the system. The critical low-inertia conditions can be improved by the introduction of specific additional controls to the RES power converters. These control schemes are known as “synthetic inertia” or “virtual inertia” controls. The paper analyzes the impact of a derivative-based inertial control on a small, isolated power system, with a…

Stability of Positive Systems in WSN Gateway for IoT&IIoT

2020

Modern sensor networks work on the basis of intelligent sensors and actuators, their connection is carried out using conventional or specifically dedicated networks. The efficiency and smooth transmission of such a network is of great importance for the accuracy of measurements, sensor energy savings, or transmission speed. Ethernet in many networks is typically based on the TCP/IP protocol suite. Regardless of whether or not the network transmission is wired or wireless, it should always be reliable. TCP ensures transmission reliability through retransmissions, congestion control and flow control. But TPC is different in networks based on the UDP protocol. The most important here is the tr…
